After The Arrest

The trial proceeded with or without her cooperation, which was largely withheld. She watched most of it through a video connection from a separate room, watching the case against her assembled piece by piece, her expression described by observers as detached.

Prosecutors presented two possible explanations for the killing, not mutually exclusive: that Joleen had come close enough to the truth about her colleague's false identity to represent a genuine threat to the life she had constructed, and that a secondary current of envy — of Joleen's warmth, her ease with people, the affection her clients showed her — had run beneath the professional relationship from the beginning.
